Nancy M. Cappello, Ph.D. is Director and Founder of Are You Dense, Inc., and Are You Dense Advocacy Inc., patient advocacy nonprofit organizations. Its mission is to educate the public about the risks and screening challenges of dense breast tissue to prevent missed, delayed and advanced stage cancer.
The organizations were launched after Dr. Cappello’s advanced-stage breast cancer diagnosis within weeks of a normal mammogram. It was at this time that her health care providers informed her that her cancer was masked by mammography for years because of her dense breast tissue.
She is the inspiration behind the first density reporting law in the nation in 2009, catapulting Connecticut as a global leader in density reporting and adjunct screening for women with dense breast tissue, birthing the density reporting grassroots movement. Currently, twenty-two states have enacted density reporting laws and a federal bill was introduced in February in the 114th Congress.
An educator by profession, Dr. Cappello spent twenty years as an education consultant and leader at the Connecticut State Department of Education. She has four earned degrees, culminating with a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut in 1995.
Dr. Cappello is the recipient of numerous honors and awards and has presented her story across the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Italy. She has been invited to lecture in Japan in July, 2015. When her mission is accomplished, Dr. Cappello is looking forward to rescuing a dog, learning Italian, and taking golf lessons.
