While diet issues are usually not ‘healthcare’, the American diet does seem related to our public health.

Was consideration given covering issues diet, school lunches, nursing home meals….?

Steve, you bring up a great question. My personal opinion is that we all too often look for some external solution to our problems when sometimes the answer is right under our nose.

But our bodies are literally made up of the building blocks that we get from out food alone. So it would make sense that unless you provide your body with what it needs by means of food then all other efforts are really futile.

I would agree that most diets do not work. But, I can personally atest to it that they do when you also do a moderately rigorous workout at least three times a week. Calorie control is the key to your weight-loss. And your key to keeping it off. I experimented with this and I will tell you after losing 20 lbs over 12 months, that even one month of eating whatever you want, you will gain weight.

      Posted at 07:16h, 28 November

      Yes. You are right.

The key to weight loss is eat well and build more muscles.Work out atleast 4 times a week.Include weight training and gain more muscle mass. The muscles will in turn increase the metabolic rate thereby reducing weight.

This is the long term solution

Why Japanese are so skinny comparing to Americans, first of all women? Is this DNA related or just food? I see a lot of TVCM in Japan which are all about diet. They have quite good and healthy food here. Women are already thin, but most of them think they are too fat and need to do diet, even though their weight is 40kg with 160cm.

The “Collaborative Symposium – health care delivery and how patients experience it” is such an important event because technology is changing the way that the medical field operates that you have to be exposed to everything. The power of information to affect people’s behavior and to improve the quality of health is as important in medical instrument care as it is the ER check in desk. By increasing the accessibility we will see improved medical care.

“A multidisciplinary collaborative symposium will inspire individual, organizational, and national collaborations that will unleash innovative thinking about health care delivery and how patients experience it.”
There is no question that we need innovative thinking about health care delivery. Having been associated with the health care industry for many years, I applaud the steps you are taking. There was a very interesting look at hiring practices for nurses and the support they were getting from a hospital in the east on Bill Moyers a couple of years ago. Talk about innovative thinking! They understood that patient care and delivery depends on the support the nurses receive and their nurse turn over was almost non existent. Whereas, the majority of hospitals today are facing staff burn out and turn over at an alarming rate. In fact many students are turning away from nursing and there is a chronic shortage of new nurses.
    Thanks again for moving forward.

I think one of the most innovative things in health you could do is to inform people about prevention, like one commenter here suggested about food and school lunches for example, but also to educate about natural forms of healing.

Drugs are usually not treating any causes, they are more focused around eliminating symptoms, so helping people to combat the causes for their illnesses would be very innovative for the health system.

Prevention is the key to the future of health care. One critical rol of new medicines will be prevention, treatment, and management of many diseases suffered by an the aging Baby Boomer generation. New, innovative medicines will assume an increasingly prominent role in the way we improve the quality of care for future generations. New pharmaceuticals are a vital part of the solution to this rapidly emerging issue.

One thing that seems to be missing from dialogs on obesity and weight loss is that the education about overall health and weight seems to be restricted to upper levels of education and should surely be a subject for study in the lowest levels of learning. With the rate of obesity in the US reaching epidemic proportions, something really needs to be done in this area.

When you mention healthcare and the experiences that people have as they go through their situations, one thong is for sure, they all experience healthcare differently. Raw foods and exercise are the keys!!! Raw foods i.e. raw vegetables and raw fruits (not cooked, boiled, steamed)- eaten straight out of the grocery bag. You just have to wash them of course to get rid of some of the pesticides but eating these kinds of foods WOULD HAVE healing effects on our diseased bodies. I wholeheartedly believe that.

Taking a different approach to health care is what you need to do if you want to regain your health if you are sick. I have found sticking just with western medicine is not the right move as they only focus on symptoms and not getting to the true cause of the problem.

By only focusing on symptoms this doesn’t allow the body to heal, as the root problem is never addressed. Alternative medicine does a much better job of doing this and you can achieve health faster. There is always a place for Western medicine and drugs, it is just not the be and end all it can be made out to be.

As someone who works with Fibromyalgia patients every day, let me tell you that I would estimate that fibromyalgia is a mind-body problem and therefore it must be treated in the same manner. We use Kundalini Yoga breathing techniques and inner body awareness to help the patient reconnect to the body with the sensory part of the brain. This seems to be more effective than the various pain pills that are marketed by pharmaceutical companies…

It’s so true healthy foods and diet is paramount to long life without disease. There are more people who are 100+ years old living in Okinawa,Japan than anywhere in the world. For many years they have been studied and it’s been found that these people eat only fresh vegetables, assorted beans, daily caught fish and all in proper portions. They never eat packaged or processed food. All there are vibrant and energetic in their old age able to do work of a 20yr old. These are lessons of a healthy eating lifestyle we can
all emulate with conscience effort for all around good health.

When someone has checked into the hospital for an overnight stay that may turn into days or even weeks, is there anything that family members and friends can do to help with the care of their loved one that would relieve the nursing staff of some duties and cut the cost of the bill?

Also, I have an number of customers that ask me about gift baskets. What are some general guidelines to consider when friends and family want to send a gift of flowers, fruit or basket gifts to someone who is staying in the hospital?

Healthcare delivery in America is so very much in need of far-reaching reforms. A symposium such as this may well find the ideas and innovations that everyone needs, especially the financially disadvantaged. What worries me is the next step. The step that involves politicians. It’s sad to say but I have come to believe that politicos that truly care about the people they’ve been elected to represent are few and far between.

I am a firm believer in the combination of good diet and good fitness.

OK that sounds so obvious, but if it is obvious why is it that the major health problems we face today are mostly lifestyle related?

The attitude to diet and fitness today is poor, judging from the world statistics on things like obesity and Diabetes II.

Our lack of self disipline in this area is a serious drain on our county’s health services and financial status.

It seems to me that what was common sense 40-50 years ago is now quite uncommon

The Institute of Medicine’s 2001 report Crossing the Quality Chasm argued for fundamental redesign of the U.S. health care system. Six years later, many health care organizations have embraced the report’s goals, but few have succeeded in making the substantial transformations needed to achieve those aims.

Taking a different approach to health care is what you need to do if you want to regain your health if you are sick. I have found sticking just with western medicine is not the right move as they only focus on symptoms and not getting to the true cause of the problem.

Protein consumption should be considered when planning a weight loss diet. Most people don’t consume enough protein in a normal diet and this becomes even more important when dieting.

Breakfast is often skipped in the fast paced world we live in, but this can be a real roadblock to steady and successful weight loss if you don’t eat the right kind of meal in the morning.

You’ll find more information about this plus 2 other great weight loss tips in my article ‘Three Powerful Tips for Healthy Weight Loss’.

Good physical health is important but so too is emotional health through human kindness. To feel accepted and cared for can do so much for the spirit which animates the will of the body to function is beyond the measure of drugs. Human touch caring, tender and sometimes even sensual (non sexual) can make a difference that words and good intentions often fail to deliver.

The obesity epidemic i getting out of hand. Indeed a transformation is required but a transformation of the mind before the transformation of the body. The weight loss battle is first won in the head before it is won by the body. The solution is teaching children fundamental weight loss in schools. they must be able to know what works and what does not. They must understand how their bodies deal with fat. The answer to obesity is empowered knowledge and not another diet. Any thoughts on this?

    addressing Carlena Powell.

As this blog is concerning Innovation and Health Care, would you care to indulge me in a little innovative controversy? We are very quick to apportion blame to all manner of external sources for all our problems (including foods and diets).

I propose we grant our bodies the RIGHT to discern what is and what is not proper for it. We need give our bodies RESPONSIBILITY for its health. It is in fact a cosmically intelligent machine. It is perfectly capable of stripping out every last gram of goodness from foods and eliminating the rest. [within reason, of course]

So perhaps we must psychologically ALLOW it to do its magnificent work. Lightening up a little, travelling in peace and TRUSTING the machine, will go a long way toward the optimum health we all strive for. Let’s not THINK ourselves to death!!

With a lot of health care innovations and dietary programs springing up around the world, people becomes entangled in a confusing thought of which program to take or to believe. Having a collaborative symposium that tackles not only the benefits anyone will get from health care innovations and dietary programs but also which program is most appropriate to its different consumers.
